Migrant Language Unit
SuniTAFE's Migrant Language Unit provides English language tuition to adults
from non-English speaking backgrounds. These English as a Second Language (ESL)
classes are provided at various levels. They help students develop English
language skills for survival needs, community access and enhanced employment
opportunities.
Adults who have recently migrated to Australia, have a permanent visa and
speak little or no English may be eligible to receive 510 hours of free language
training. This is part of the Australian Government's Adult Migrant English
Program (AMEP). Applicants must register for a class within three months of
coming to Australia and start a class within one year. Please see SuniTAFE's
[link]AMEP page[/link] for more information.
SuniTAFE also has a Volunteer Home Tutor program to help new migrants learn
English. Anyone who can speak English well can volunteer their time to help an
AMEP enrolled migrant to learn English. Volunteers receive free training to help
them tutor new migrants.
Migrants who have completed the AMEP course, or who are not eligible for it, may
apply to be part of the Language, Literacy and Numeracy Program (LLNP). Please
see SuniTAFE's [link]LLNP page[/link] for more information.
