Time flies, it has been 5 months since I arrived in Mildura, Victoria, Australia, but my heart is as excited as the first day when I arrived. Here local people are so kind and friendly, the winter sunshine is so lovely, the beautiful great vineyards, the beautiful Murray River, the kangaroos, the roses on campus, so many lovely things which have made me fall in love with this place – Mildura!

I am studying the Diploma of Children’s Services. Due to the language barrier and a late arrival, I felt at the beginning that I was going to struggle to catch up, but SuniTAFE were very considerate and supportive, and a tutor was arranged especially for me to catch up with the classes I had missed, and I also got lots of great assistance from the course teacher and my classmates, everybody was so kind and gave me lots of generous help and warm care, which enabled me to catch up with the rest of the class very quickly.

I like this course very much, the teaching methodology and teaching concept is quite different to how we were taught in China, the class is very interesting and motivational. I have started a work placement, which is a required part of the course. The observation and participation activities with children are really enjoyable and interesting. It’s great fun to study this course, and I’ve learned lots and gained innovative ideas about working with children.

I am lucky enough to stay with a local family in Mildura, which is a great chance to learn about Australian language and culture, sometimes I make Chinese food for us to share, and enjoy, and I have been welcomed into their family.

I have been lucky enough to get a part time job with a local company with the help of the International Students Unit at SuniTAFE. The company is a non-profit government funded company which provides services for people who have a disability. My role is to look after disabled children when they finish school and I also look after those who need care during weekends. I love this job, I am well paid and have been welcomed into the organisation. The company provide me with some training which makes me more competent in this job. In the holiday times I will look after children, and participate in some outdoor activities with them, which I am really looking forward to. My job provides me with not only financial support, but also provides me with great experience for my study.

I like Mildura, I love the local people, and I love the Diploma of Children’s Services course at SuniTAFE.
