Success Stories

Gary the Bricklayer

Gary approached the Skills Store after seeing a recent Skills Store advertisement on the television. His employment background was in bricklaying. Gary had started his trade as a young boy and had over twenty years experience and now runs a successful bricklaying business. Gary had no formal qualifications in bricklaying.

Gary had recently seen an advertisement to quote on a government project; after enquiring about the tender he was told he would have to provide evidence of his qualifications as a bricklayer to be eligible.

After making an appointment with the Skill Store, Gary sat down with the consultant who provided Gary with information on skills recognition; one of the  services offered by the Skills Store. This process allows people to match their work skills against national qualifications and have them formally recognised.

The Skills Book program used by the Skills Store consultant indentified that a Certificate III in Bricklaying was what Gary required to be nationally accredited.

The Skills Book program also provided Gary with a detailed report on what he needed to provide to prove his skills and allow him to obtain his Certificate III in Bricklaying, possibly without having to restudy or re-train using the skills recognition process.

Gary also received a letter referring him onto his chosen Registered Training Organisation, a grant worth $250 to assist with the cost of his skills recognition application. Gary successfully gained his Certificate III in Bricklaying without having to restudy or retrain.

The Skills Recognition process can be used to obtain qualifications in most industries including business, administration, finance and many more.

The Sunraysia Skills Store provides free independent advice & information to members of the public about the national educational & training system. This includes course information to assist with employment & career development, as well as helping people seek skills recognition to gain qualifications without having to repeat training in skills and knowledge already gained.

Gina the Apprenticeship Consultant

Gina approached the Sunraysia Skills Store to enquire about the skills recognition process and the services offered at the Sunraysia Skills Store.

Gina had had over 15 years experience working within the employment, education & training industry; but had no formal qualifications to reflect her knowledge & skills gained over the years.

Gina made an appointment with the Skills Store consultant, who sat down with Gina and looked over her past employment history her previous qualifications and training records and mapped out a qualification that would recognise her current skill base. The Skills Book program used by the Skills Store consultant identified that the Diploma of Employment Services was that best qualification to match her current skills.

Because of Gina's previous work history she was a prime candidate to apply for Skills Recognition and explore the opportunity of gaining the qualification without having to re-study or re-train. The Skills Store consultant matched Gina’s work skills with the qualification requirements and provided Gina with a comprehensive report detailing what information Gina was required to produce to verify her skills and turn them into a nationally recognised qualification using the skills recognition process.

Gina was also provided with a $250 grant from the Skills Store to assist with the cost of her skills recognition application and a referral letter to her chosen Registered Training Organisation to assess her application.

Gina successfully gained her Diploma of Employment Services without having to restudy or retrain.

Mary the Administration Assistant

Mary approached the Skills Store after being told that she was to be made redundant, after 15 years of employment with the one company. This company was relocating their administration offices outside the area due to the 2009 global financial crisis.

Although Mary had gained plenty of workplace knowledge and experience over the years, she had no formal qualifications to reflect these skills and was referred to the Skills Store for assistance.

The Skills Store Consultant looked over Mary’s past employment and training records and realised Mary had extensive knowledge in all facets of office administration including accounts keeping, payroll services plus general administration duties. The Skills Store consultant also looked over her current and previous position descriptions and started to map out pathways into national recognised qualifications that would reflect her skills base.

The Skills Store consultant recomended that Mary looked at two national qualifications to reflect these skills. The first qualification was a Certificate IV in Business Administration; the second was a Certificate III in Financial Services (Accounts Keeping).

Mary was given a comprehensive report detailing what information Mary was required to produce to verify these skills and turn them into nationally recognised qualifications using Skills Recognition.  Mary was provided with a grant to assist with the cost of her skills recognition application and referred into a Registered Training Organistion to assess this application.

Mary received both qualifications without having to restudy and retrain. Mary was also recommended to complete the Diploma of Accounting to further enhance her skills and job prospects, and she decided to do this at home.

Mary contacted the Skills Store some weeks after receiving her Certificates and informed the Skills Store consultant that she has gained new employment which was assisted by her having gained these qualifications.
