Studying early childhood education at Sunraysia Institute of TAFE provides you with skills that you can use in a broad range of settings, including home-based or childcare centre-based situations, where children from infancy to twelve years are cared for by people other than their primary caregivers.
You will learn how to provide expert education and care for babies and children, how to work within the relevant legal and ethical frameworks and all the communication and personal skills you will need to be confident in a busy and complex workplace.
You will learn the skills and knowledge required to design and implement curriculum and care programs, in early childhood education and care services and be capable of supervising other staff and volunteers and oversee the social, emotional, physical and educational needs of infants and young children.

English Proficiency | IELTS 5.5 or equivalent test score OR successful completion of Upper Intermediate ELICOS at Sunraysia Institute of TAFE. |

Other Requirements | Students must be at least 18 years old when they commence studies. Strong literacy and numeracy skills are an advantage. A Working With Children Check (volunteer) must be obtained before starting work placement. If a student goes on to perform casual work not related to placement, then an employee Working With Children Check is required at a cost. Some organisations may require students on placement to provide immunisation records. |
Course Progression | The Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care is a prerequisite for entry into the Diploma. |
Materials | Students must purchase 2 royal blue shirts and black or navy pants or shorts for placement as well as closed in shoes (not sneakers). Text books are provided for students at no extra cost. |
Practical Component | Several full-time work placements are included in these courses. Practical placements are compulsory and arranged by the Institute. Certificate III includes a minimum of 180 hours of practical placement in an early childhood care centre. Up to 20 additional placement hours are scheduled to ensure the student achieves the required competencies during placement. These placements are full-time over 6 weeks throughout the course and unpaid. The Diploma includes a minimum of 260 hours of practical placement at an early childhood care centre scheduled over 8 weeks and are unpaid. Up to 40 additional placement hours are scheduled to ensure the student achieves the required competencies during placement. |
