John Deere and SuniTAFE work together to deliver a John Deere Technician (JD Tech) program. The first such program in Victoria was held by SuniTAFE in Swan Hill in October 2014, and saw eleven apprentices from the John Deere dealerships of Haeuslers Echuca, Shepparton, Mildura & Sea Lake; Emmetts Horsham, Swan Hill & Warracknabeal; Cervus Equipment Leongatha South and Hutcheon A&G, Finley undergoing hands-on, in-depth training.
“Our JD Tech program gives students the opportunity to gain experience with advanced technology from the global leader in the agricultural machinery business,” said Peter Wanckel, Managing Director for John Deere Limited. “These students get unique, on-the-job training in the field, and can further their competencies through advanced training provided by John Deere and Sunraysia Institute of TAFE.”
The JD Tech program provides apprentices with hands-on training unique to John Deere machinery. The program increases the specialised knowledge developed during apprenticeship studies. JD Tech connects the Agricultural Machinery Technician Apprenticeship Program, John Deere Limited staff, SuniTAFE teaching staff and students, and John Deere dealership personnel together to attract high-quality apprentices to a career in the agricultural machinery industry.
As part of the partnership SuniTAFE gets access to current John Deere equipment, plus access to and training on John Deere’s exclusive Service ADVISOR diagnostic tools. John Deere Limited has also provided a new John Deere 7230R Row-Crop Tractor and a 5085E Utility Tractor for students to use.
The students are excited about the program and being able to learn on John Deere equipment will ensure that they are going to be successful John Deere Technicians.
JD Tech successfully operates in Australia, Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. The program is completed over four years and consists of an additional two-week training block at Sunraysia Institute of TAFE each year dedicated to JD Tech. For the remainder of the student’s apprenticeship, he or she attends all regular classes and is employed by a John Deere dealership. During this time, the students gain extensive experience working with hydraulic systems, electronics, mechanical systems, and online training in Service ADVISOR, and John Deere’s Ag Management Solutions, which includes GPS guidance systems and precision farming applications.
“John Deere equipment and technology is known around the world as the most advanced and the best supported,” Mr Wanckel said. “To support our products, our company and our dealerships spend countless hours developing and training the best technicians available. This partnership will help John Deere and Sunraysia Institute of TAFE to recognise and employ the best upcoming mechanical talent.”
