SuniTAFE provides the Australian Government’s Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) to help newly arrived refugees and other migrants improve English language skills. Our AMEP Volunteer Home Tutor Program provides informal language assistance through volunteers, on a one-to-one basis, in the migrant’s home or another mutually agreed venue.
Conducted in the Mildura and Swan Hill areas, it is an invaluable program for those who are unable to access classroom based classes and for others provides an extra opportunity to develop English language skills.
With the acquisition of English language skills, newly arrived migrants are empowered to access study and work options. It also gives them a greater understanding of social situations in Australia, which also provides many opportunities.
The Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) is the Australian Government’s largest settlement program. It provides English as a Second Language (ESL) tuition to eligible migrant and humanitarian entrants to assist them to settle successfully in Australia. The program is funded and administered by the Australian Government through the Department of Industry.
Being a volunteer
During the five 2½ hour training sessions, volunteers will develop the skills to become an effective volunteer.
Topics covered include:
- Adults as learners
- Identifying learner needs
- The migration and settlement process
- Cross cultural communication
On the completion of training, volunteers will be matched with an eligible migrant. The volunteer home tutor can then begin assisting the migrant develop the language skills required to enable them to work through the everyday issues encountered in the settlement process and integration into the community.
Volunteers typically tutor their matched migrant for about an hour a week for six months. After six months, they can cease volunteering, request to be matched with another migrant, or can continue tutoring their existing one.
Volunteers do not need to have any specific qualifications. You do not need to have a second language or previous teaching experience. You only need to be over 18 years of age and have an interest in other cultures, along with a good level of English. An initial interview and police check will be required.
