SuniTAFE Graduation a “Proud Mum” Moment for Swan Hill District Health Nurses

29 Apr 2024

Four SuniTAFE nursing graduates have followed in their mothers’ footsteps by joining the team at Swan Hill District Health.

For Jaymee Rodgers, Natalie Hodgson, Bonnie Findlay, and Megan Bye, their career pathways look the same as any other SuniTAFE nursing graduate.

They each completed their nursing qualifications in 2023 and have gone on to use their new skills to care for others at Swan Hill District Health.

However, for these four students, their story is a little more unique. When they joined the Swan Hill District Health team, they joined their mothers who are also working as nurses in the very same hospital.

Three of the mother and daughter pairs were present at the Graduation and Awards event in Swan Hill last month to celebrate the symbolic passing of the baton.

They each expressed how touching it was to welcome their daughters into their professional ranks.

Swan Hill District Health Executive Director of Clinical Care and System Improvement Chloe Keogh was also in attendance to congratulate her newest employees.

“This was such a ‘proud mum’ moment for these families, with their daughters graduating at such a lovely occasion, but also an extremely proud moment for Swan Hill District Health as an organisation to have next generation of staff joining the organisation,” Ms Keogh said.

She further acknowledged the value in local TAFE training in contributing to Swan Hill’s healthcare capabilities.

“Nursing training offers so much for people who undertake the training,” Ms Keogh said.

“We are expecting that our nurses need to be agile and progressive to keep up with the latest advances in treatments and care options. They need to be always caring and committed to providing the patient the support they need. TAFE training teaches this.

“You can find nurses working in all segments of our community, from school nurses, doctors’ clinics, community health clinics, hospitals, drug and medical equipment companies, and in radiology and diagnostics, so this training has a big impact.”
