SuniTAFE’s education staff spent a day exploring what it means to provide quality education at their Teaching and Learning Conference at the start of the year.
SuniTAFE’s education staff spent a day exploring what it means to provide quality education at their Teaching and Learning Conference at the start of the year.
The Blended Teaching and Learning Conference was held face to face at the Mildura campus, with workshops being shared via zoom to ensure staff from both the Mildura and Swan Hill campuses could attend.
A range of presenters were invited to the event, including guest speaker Donna Campisi who shared her story of surviving a stroke as a child and, through her strength, overcame struggles to walk again.
The day was centred around the theme of student wellbeing. The morning workshops focused on different aspects of wellbeing, such as psychological safety, growth, empathy, and tolerance. The afternoon workshops focused on industry.
These sessions provided an opportunity for teachers to collaborate with peers, learn from experts in the field, gain new insights into industry developments, as well as a provide a chance for reflection.
SuniTAFE Education Development Services Team Leader Josephine Bennett believes this will translate to better outcomes for students in the classroom.
“All these topics have a direct relationship to the growth and wellbeing of teachers and students.”
“Teachers can celebrate what they are doing well and learn from what they could do better. This improves the educational experience for students in the long term,” she said.
The Conference also received positive feedback from the teaching staff who attended.
One teacher expressed that the day provided them with practical knowledge to use in the classroom, while another enjoyed the passion of the presenters.
“The presenters' sessions I attended were brilliant and gave real skills and strategies to use in my everyday work.”
“Our industry session was fantastic. They were very passionate about what they were doing and it was great to hear and see what they have been doing and are planning for the future.”
The Teaching and Learning Conference was held on January 24, which coincides with the International Day of Education. The theme of this day is “to invest in people, prioritize education”.
It was first adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 2018, and highlights the role education has towards peace and development.
