Studying a Certificate IV in Information Technology (ICT40120) is a vastly different career path to the one Harry Marlais first took after leaving school at 16.

Initially the 22-year-old began his working life as a plumbing apprentice.

“After three years into being a plumber I realised it wasn’t for me and I didn’t enjoy it, so I just worked on the family block working with table grapes,” he said.

“I started thinking about what I was interested in and wanted to study and be qualified in something I enjoyed and that would give me different job opportunities.

“I saw that you could study a Certificate III in Information Technology (ICT30120) at SuniTAFE for free so that is where I started out.”

As he was near the completion of his Certificate III in Information Technology (ICT30120), Harry was encouraged to apply for a scholarship through Destination Australia to assist with covering the costs of undertaking a Certificate IV in Information Technology.

“When I was told I received it, I did not believe it at first. It was really good to have received it,” Harry said.
“It’s difficult to work and study at the same time so to have received the scholarship has allowed me to focus a lot more on my studies and not be so worried about the financial cost of studying.”

Once Harry completes his Certificate IV in Information Technology (ICT40120), he plans to continue with further study with the aim of becoming a computer programmer.

“I have enjoyed being creative and enjoyed the web development and programming units within the course and it was great being able to first get into it through the Free TAFE scheme,” Harry said.

“My advice for anyone who would like to study, definitely look into SuniTAFE and for those unable to afford to study, there are a lot of free TAFE courses available and that are worth considering.”
