Judicial College of Victoria comes to SuniTAFE

10 Oct 2023

SuniTAFE students hosted a welcome dinner for the Judicial College of Victoria last Thursday 5 October, as part of their Back to Country event.

The Judicial College of Victoria is an educational body, providing ongoing knowledge and insight to Victoria’s court judges, magistrates, coroners, and VCAT members.

Each year, the College runs a Back to Country program, which allows members to visit sites of significance, learn about Aboriginal history, and connect with local community. This year, the program was offered in Mildura.

Students from SuniTAFE’s Dulka Yuppata Indigenous Training Centre were invited to host the event’s welcome dinner in the SuniTASTE Training Restaurant.

Those enrolled in Certificate II in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Cultural Arts (CUA20420) created the centrepieces for each table.

Students completing their Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE0000001) and Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC0000001) planned, prepared, and delivered the service on the evening.

The students used native ingredients to cook and serve a diverse menu complete with Yabby Crostini, Beef Ragu, Lemon Myrtle Syrup Cake, and Wattle Seed Biscotti.

Education Delivery Manager, Koorie Programs and Youth Education Lara Collins says that it was a privilege for SuniTAFE to host this event, and a great learning experience for our students.

“These events are so valuable for our students to participate in, they provide them with real life experiences,” Lara said.

“The welcome dinner has given them an understanding of planning all stages of an event and working with community.”

“It was also a great opportunity for us to showcase the skills and knowledge students gain when studying at SuniTAFE."

The evening was a success, with positive feedback being received from those who attended.
