Completing a short course is an efficient way to gain the most up-to-date industry skills and can be beneficial for even the most experienced workers.

SuniTAFE is offering opportunities to upskill with short courses in 2024. Employee safety is at the centre of these short courses.

Two of the courses, Work Safely at Heights Short Course (SCAHC30116WH) and Enter and work in confined spaces (SCAHC30116CS), are taught by Primary Industries Teacher Craig Smith.
These are vital skills for employees working in Primary Industries.

“For some jobs it’s a requirement to have these competencies, and for others its important because so many deaths happen in confined spaces because people just don’t know the dangers,” Craig said.

“Some of the biggest risks in my industry of work is falling from heights, or getting really sick from entering a confined space without the proper equipment and not knowing what to do.”

Though they are taught within the Horticulture and Agriculture department, Craig says that these competencies are valuable within a wide range of occupations.

“Knowing how to work safely at heights is a necessary skill for builders, engineers, those in the wine industry, and maintenance officers in schools and retirement villages,” Craig said.

“Meanwhile, plumbers, engineers, and winery and mining employees all need to know how to work in confined spaces.”

SuniTAFE’s short courses are offered throughout the year and are delivered both at Mildura and Swan Hill campuses.

They offer both theoretical and practical learning exercises to ensure students are fully competent in the short course study area.
