Biggest Morning Tea | 2024

SuniTAFE joined in with many other organisations and community groups across Australia in May to host an Australia's Biggest Morning Tea community event.

Australia's Biggest Morning Tea is Cancer Council Australia's most popular fundraising event with every dollar raised put towards Cancer Council's life-saving research, prevention, support programs, and information.

Roughly 100 people gathered in the Courtyard Cafe at SuniTAFE on Thursday to eat delicious home baked goods, enjoy freshly made coffee and raise important funds for the Cancer Council Victoria.

SuniTAFE’s Certificate I in Transition Education (22567VIC) students spent just over a week baking and preparing for the Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea event.

Transition Education teacher Ruth Tankard said on the day, eight students and five teachers worked tirelessly serving the large number of customers and raised more than $1300.

“This year our goal was to raise $800 so we have well and truly exceeded that,” she said.

“It is by far our biggest cafe to date with an estimated 80 coffees and hot chocolates made, as well as 19 babyccinos, which were made for our visitors from TAFE Kids, which was a real highlight.”

Students had made a large selection of baked goods including scones, savoury scones, jelly slice, brownies and gluten free orange cake.

“The students did an amazing job,” Ruth said.

“This was the first cafe for this year’s class. They did a fantastic job, worked as a team and each of them took a lot of initiative.

“The cafe is a great way to give our students real life work experience and is an excellent way for them to learn and develop skills and knowledge.”

All the funds raised on the day will go to the Cancer Council Australia.

“Every Australian has been connected to someone living with Cancer or touched by cancer in some way so we felt this was a great cause to support,” Ruth said.

“Absolutely all the money we raised will go to the Cancer Council Australia, who do a great job to support those living with cancer and their families.

“We are thankful to all the staff and students who supported the cafe and look forward to hosting regular Courtyard Cafe’s in term three."
