Heart of TAFE Photography Competition – Victorian Winner
SuniTAFE student Mei (Khanh Ngan) Ho’s photography skills have been recognised again with her photo winning the Victorian Heart of TAFE photography competition for the second year in a row.
The Heart of TAFE photography competition encourages students across the country to submit a photo that represents their experience at TAFE.
Mei’s winning entry captures her friends in the automotive department.
“When I first read the theme for this year's competition, "Heart of TAFE," my thoughts immediately went to the teachers,” Mei said.
“This year, I wanted to present a diverse image of our TAFE experience, particularly through the automotive class. I captured a moment where the teacher and students were actively engaged in hands-on practice.
“I see our teachers as akin to an automobile engine—constantly running, giving their all, and dedicating themselves fully to imparting knowledge and experience.”
Mei loves photography and is grateful that she has the opportunity to pursue this hobby alongside her studies in hospitality management.
“I have a deep passion for photography, which I believe is in my blood,” she said.
“From my grandfather who was a war photographer to my father who is also a photographer, I inherited this passion from them.
“I am deeply inspired by my family. My father captures life’s fleeting moments, from joyous celebrations to solemn farewells, showcasing the importance of cherishing memories.
“My mother, a dedicated teacher, has spent her life educating and inspiring students. The biggest lesson she taught me was that learning to be human is a level that no one can graduate from in their lifetime.
“My older brother, an artist, has fuelled my passion for painting with his vibrant colours and unique perspectives. His influence has deeply shaped my appreciation for art and life’s moments.”
International Student of the Year – Vocational Education and Training – Finalist
Mei also attended the Victorian International Education Awards as a finalist for the category of International Student of the Year - Vocational Education and Training.
The nomination recognises Mei as an advocate for both Mildura and SuniTAFE, as well as her ambition and dedication to her field of hospitality.
“Mildura was the first city I independently settled in upon arriving in Australia and the residents warmly embraced me,” she said.
“Mildura is not like a big city, but it still has every facility that we need, like an airport and a hospital, so it is very convenient and lovely to live here.
“During personal challenges, the officers and teachers at SuniTAFE provided invaluable advice and support,” she said.
“I’ve never experienced such care from school members before, making me feel that SuniTAFE is like a second family and, as a tradition, I keep on motivating new students facing similar difficulties.
After completing a qualification in commercial cookery, Mei is now studying her Diploma of Hospitality Management (SIT50422) and dreams of opening her own restaurant one day.
“I have a great passion for healthy food, so if I get the chance, I’d like to open a vegetarian restaurant where I can provide local, healthy, plant-based food to the community,” she said.
“SuniTAFE has equipped me with plenty of foundation knowledge and practical hands-on skills to achieve this dream.”
