VETDSS Allied Health Industry Placement Case Studies
Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance HLT33015 students in their second year of the VET Delivered to Secondary Students (VETDSS) program participated in industry placements earlier this year.

The students were placed in a range of businesses across Mildura. They were given the opportunity to practice new skills in supervised environments with experts in their fields.

The following case studies demonstrate the many career opportunities available to students undertaking an Allied Health qualification at SuniTAFE.

Mikayla completed her placement in the midwifery department of Buronga HealthOne. During her placement, she was able to shadow nurses and midwives in a range of contexts. She attended home visits and infant check-ups, and learned how to complete vaccination records.

Not only did this experience contribute to Mikayla’s required hours of placement, having the opportunity to trial different duties within the department gave her great insight into the directions her course could take her.

Lilliana is another student who recently completed her placement. She attended the Allied Health department of Mildura Base Public Hospital. She shadowed practitioners who provide services to patients recovering from surgery. This includes Allied Health Assistants, an Exercise Physiologist, and an Occupational Therapist.

The diversity of roles presented to Lilliana was of great value and she learned many new skills for her future.

Finally, Ebony completed her placement at Mildura Rural City Council Child Maternal Health. She was able to shadow the Maternal Health Nurses in a wide range of scenarios, including the facilitation of new parenting groups, immunisations, and child health check-ups.

Ebony enjoyed this experience greatly, which was reflected in her placement feedback which detailed that she was always willing to step in and help with a smile on her face.

Individual Support and Allied Health Teacher, Amanda Hocking is pleased with how the students embraced their placement experience.

“Each of these ladies represented SuniTAFE and their home school proudly, and in a friendly, professional manner. They learned a lot, and will no doubt carry the skills and insight they gained long into their careers.”
