Overview

Feed the world with a horticulture qualification from Sunraysia Institute of TAFE! 

The SuniTAFE horticulture program will give you knowledge and practical skills related to horticultural food-producing crops and propagation and care of nursery plants.

The program is delivered at SuniTAFE’s commercially operating SMARTFarm which provides hands-on experience using the latest and innovative technologies. Crops grown at the SMART Farm include citrus, grapes, almonds, olives, dates, annual vegetables, avocadoes and range of fruit trees, garden plants and native plants are propagated in the on-farm nursery.

Students will learn about:
•    Plant information and identification
•    Weed and pest management
•    Management of soils or growing media
•    Plant nutrition
•    Irrigation systems 
•    Operation of machinery and equipment
•    The preparation and application of chemicals.

Total Program Duration 2 years full-time
Total Program Tuition Fees in AUD $28,000 (Certificate III in Nursery Operations + Diploma of Horticulture)
Order of Qualifications 1.   Certificate III in Nursery Operations AHC31120 (110468D) 52 weeks
2.    Diploma of Horticulture AHC50416 (094776G) 52 weeks
University Pathway No formal pathway to a partner university is in place for international students.

Prerequisites

 
English Proficiency IELTS 5.5 or equivalent test score OR successful completion of Upper Intermediate ELICOS at Sunraysia Institute of TAFE or a pathway partner.
Academic Requirements Successful completion of the equivalent of Australian Year 11 high school studies.
Other Requirements Students must be at least 18 years old when they commence studies.
Course Progression Must successfully complete each level before progressing to the next qualification in the program.


Other Information

 
Materials Students are recommended to purchase work boots and wear appropriate sun safe work clothes including hats for classes at the SuniTAFE Farm.
Practical component SuniTAFE operates a 30 hectare commercial horticulture farm growing citrus, vines, almonds, olives, dates, avocadoes, annual vegetables and nursery plants. A range of fruit trees, garden plants and native plants are propagated in the on-farm nursery. Students undertake practical components of the program at the SuniTAFE SMARTFarm.
