SuniTAFE educators spent last week in China teaching an Introduction to Australian Cookery micro-credential to students at Nanjing Commercial College.
Education Delivery Manager of Hospitality Peter Webley and Commercial Cookery Teacher Dalton Kendrigan delivered the course to more than 100 Nanjing Commercial College students, showcasing the Victorian TAFE sector as a destination for quality education.
The micro-credential drew content from five units of study in the Certificate IV in Kitchen Management (SIT40521), demonstrating Australian teaching methodology, assessments used in the VET sector, and practical skills required for the Australian cookery industry.
As part of the course, students learned how to cook crumbed chicken and an orange and almond cake. Both dishes were picked for their significance to Australian cuisine and local fresh produce.
The experience of teaching in China has been a fulfilling one for Peter Webley, who enjoyed getting to know the students during his brief time as their educator.
“The past week has been full of so much learning and new experiences and knowledge for the students, and also for us as we leave completely fulfilled by this incredible opportunity to immerse ourselves in Nanjing culture and education,” he said.
“We are so impressed by the students at Nanjing Commercial College who have treated us with so much respect and shown us their passion and enthusiasm for cooking.
“Although the Introduction to Australian Cookery has been short, we can see the growth of students in both confidence and their own abilities.”
By completing this micro-credential, the students obtained a foundational understanding of the Australian cookery industry.
This means that, if they decide to travel to Australia and join SuniTAFE’s international education program, they will be set up with valuable skills to commence their course.
The delivery of this micro-credential forms part of a larger effort to increase Victoria’s transnational education capability through the Victorian Government’s Yes to International Students Fund.
Additional micro-credentials in information technology, horticulture, and teacher training are planned to be delivered later this year and into 2026.
