Two Afghani women who recently settled in Mildura are dedicating their time to help local people who are blind or have low vision.

Fatema Negah and Masoma Zakizada joined Vision Australias team of volunteers earlier this year and said volunteering allowed them to be more active in the community, learn and improve their english.

Ms Kakizada was a practicing midwife in Afghanistan with her own private clinic and taught medicine at University. Ms Negah was studying engineering and architecture at university in Iran. Both women are also learning English at SuniTAFE.

#SuniTAFE's 3rd year apprentice group, two staff and six local chefs had a wonderful day recently with a study tour to producers in the Boundary Bend area.

Our chef Peter Webley shared the following insight into their experiences. "We began with a tour of the olive oil process including harvesting then all the way through to the finished pressed oil. Our guide for the day was Rob McGavin who is one of two founders and directors of Boundary Bend Estate.

On the day of our tour we were also joined by another small group of media personalities and nutritionists. These included travel journalists and also Editor-in-chief of Better Homes and Gardens Australia Julia Zaetta, who has strong ties to Mildura as she grew up here.

We shared a lunch and directed olive oil tasting with Rob. The lunch was prepared by the Cobram Estate chef at large Kevin O’Connor. He is based in the USA and is promoting the product both here during the olive harvest and back home to the US market. The dishes he creates in the grove at the “super shack” are produced to highlight the quality and beautiful flavour of the oils.

We first had some chargrilled bok-choy dressed with orange and olive oil followed by some slow cooked lamb leg with a curry sauce and green beans. To finish we had a crumble with an olive oil ice cream which blew our mind!! Kevin said he believed in the quality of the product and the simple food cooked well and dressed with the oil is best.

On the way home from Boundary Bend we stopped off at the Trentham Murray Cod Farm run by the Underhill family. It was great to see the farm and the quality of the product they are producing. The water from the river in the larger dams definitely gives the fish their natural wild Murray River taste. The dams look quite muddy due to the fine clay from recent dam building works but this has not effected the flavour.

Overall we had a wonderful day and I think everybody has taken something away. The commitment of Boundary Bend to education surrounding their Olive oil is absolutely remarkable when you consider the scale of the business. They are always willing to share their knowledge to all.

The pride these producers have for their product is something I think is very endearing and something I hope the chefs have taken with them when producing meals for their customers."

Thank you to both these producers for engaging with our students and future chefs and sharing their amazing knowledge and wonderful local produce 🙂

Which industries generally require post-school education?
There are large differences in the educational profile of the workforces across industries. In some industries, large proportions of workers hold post-school qualifications. For many jobs in these industries, after school study is required.

The most highly educated industries are:
• Education and Training (86% hold post-school qualifications)
• Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (83%)
• Health Care and Social Assistance (82%).

There are other industries, however, which offer good employment opportunities for people who have not completed study after leaving school, such as Accommodation and Food Services and Retail Trade.

According to the latest Australian Jobs 2018 just released - Victoria is the second largest employing state. Over the past five years, Victoria added more jobs than any other state.

Health Care and Social Assistance provided the largest number of new jobs during this period, with significant numbers also added in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services and Construction.

Job losses, however, were recorded in six of the 19 industries, with the largest fall in Wholesale Trade (down 13,600).

Around 68% of Victorian workers hold post-school qualifications and they are more likely to have a bachelor degree or higher qualification than the national average.

Melbourne has the most highly educated workforce in the state (37% hold a bachelor degree or higher).

Victoria’s age profile is similar to the national average, although some areas have relatively large shares of workers aged 55 years or older, such as Hume, North West, and Warrnambool and South West.
