What a wonderful experience for them all

Excellent!

At the young age of 18 and just finished high school in Phuket, Thailand, Earn travelled to Mildura, following her mother’s footsteps to learn English.

Earn, familiar with the Sunraysia lifestyle that her mother embraces, she too now calls Mildura home. Earn’s mother has lived in Mildura for quite some time, marrying a local man and having two young girls.

“When I moved here, I could only speak a few words of English. I have learnt a lot from my younger sisters” she said. “For the first three months that I lived here we spoke only Thai at home, now we speak only English.”

Learning English has been a great experience for Earn, “Libby is a beautiful teacher. I enjoyed playing English games with other people in the class and learn to communicate with people from different cultures.”

With the ability to speak confidently in English, having completed Certificate II in III in Spoken and Written English, Earn wishes to focus on getting permanent residency in Australia and apply for teaching at La Trobe University.

Earn will continue working part time at Kkings Palace to save money towards her study.

I chose #SuniTAFE as the VCAL program offered more hands on learning experiences for me to try different work skills and programs to support my learning. Its a great learning environment with lots of education support.

This course has given me the opportunity to get work placement and the skills and knowledge to help me achieve getting a job. My leadership skills and confidence levels have increased.

I would really like to study Conservation and Land Management to be a Park Ranger - Aiden Brook, SuniTAFE VCAL student.
TEACHER PROFILE: LIBBY ALDERTON

Libby Alderton has coordinated SuniTAFE’s English Language courses for more than 26 years, with courses aiming to provide students, mostly migrants to Australia with a firm grasp of the English language.

As a veteran educator of 47 years, it’s a sense of achievement that Libby loves sharing in. Everyone is here for the same purpose, which is to try and fit in, learn the language and feel part of the community.

The program offers Certificates in Spoken and Written English, from preliminary level through to Certificate III.
Students are encouraged to mix in with the community, be job ready and to pursue higher education. The higher level students just love the idea of getting a higher qualification here in Australia.

“It’s all about learning survival skills so these people can actually tell you their name, and say it clearly. We aim for our student to be able to fill in a simple form, or eventually go to the doctors without a family member or interpreter” said Libby.

“It’s about them performing those simple, everyday tasks that a lot of us probably take for granted. Once they can say hello to someone, or ask for something in a shop for example, that leads to a great sense of empowerment.”

Ive been doing VCAL for the past 2 years and I enjoy learning a lot more now as my teachers treat me like a young adult and allow me to do things with more trust.

My favourite part of the course is the hands-on learning. This course has really helped me to concentrate. The course assisted me with getting a job, helping me with my resume and cover letter. - Leah Andrews #SuniTAFE VCAL student

If this is CGEA I highly recommend this course for young people were unable to finish their schooling for one reason or another. It's a good place to start if you are unsure of what you want to study, I found it a really good environment for learning and I got lots of support from the teachers and other students. As a result of my efforts in this course got Academic student of the year 2013 and then went on to do a Work Education course which then I was able to getting a job.

Always I interested in this project to be among of people who benefit from this project

If this is CGEA I highly recommend this for even older people who have done no study for many years before you embark on what you really want to study, I found it to be a safe nurturing environment and though I didn't know at the time it was this class that was my foundation that made the transition into Animal studies and earning Academic student of the year 2016 and further study so much easier and no way as daunting than what it would have been without it. And there is nothing no matter the assurance of feeling been out of your depth and set up to fail.

Thanks for the testimonial Casie Eagles !!!

Thanks so much Kim Allison Chambers!!!!
