Check out the great calendar of events for NAIDOC Week in Swan Hill.

NAIDOC celebrations are held around Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The week is celebrated not just in the Indigenous communities but also in increasing numbers of government agencies, schools, local councils and workplaces.

It's World Giraffe Day today!

Did you know Monarto Zoo is part of a breeding program working to save the world’s tallest mammal from extinction? The Zoo is a great supporter of #SuniTAFE's animal studies students providing valuable and memorable work experience.

Monarto Zoo is the largest open-range zoo in the world spanning more than 1,000 hectares of fauna and flora and the only zoological park to be completely power neutral.

Owned and operated by Zoos South Australia Monarto Zoo opened in 1983 as a closed special purpose breeding facility. After officially opening to the public in October 1993, Monarto Zoo has evolved into a true biopark representing a unique blend of a conservation and zoological park. Its principle purpose is to provide a place for the conservation of Australian and exotic wildlife, public recreation and education.

Monarto Zoo is located 45 minutes (70 kilometres) from South Australia's capital city, Adelaide, and is the gateway to the picturesque Murraylands region. The zoo is open every day of the year from 9:30am to 5:00pm and focuses on African and Australian animals. The zoology and botany of these continents is reflected in the zoo’s major exhibits; Chimpanzee, Cheetah, African Painted Dog and Lion viewing platforms, Southern White Rhinoceros Boma viewing area, African Waterhole viewing platform and Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby walk-through exhibit.

Click the link below to find out the names of the two new giraffe calves born recently. The adorable duo are the 40th and 41st calves to be born at Monarto Zoo, making them the most successful giraffe breeding facility in Australasia.

And what better way to celebrate these gentle giants than announcing the names of Monarto Zoo's latest additions, our two adorable two-month-old giraffe boys! Myeisha’s calf has been named Thando, meaning love in Zulu, while Kinky’s son has been named Mabuti, meaning boots in Swahili. The adorable duo are the 40th and 41st calves to be born at Monarto Zoo, making us the most successful giraffe breeding facility in Australasia.

On June 14 of each year the World Health Organization (WHO) celebrates around the world the World Blood Donor Day. It aims to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank donors for their contribution to saving lives.

EVERY BLOOD DONATION CAN SAVE THREE LIVES
People of all walks of life need blood products. Some need it to get them through a serious event in their lives, like cancer or a dangerous pregnancy. Others have medical conditions which mean they need blood products regularly to stay alive or be healthy.

There are about five litres of blood in the human body and its made up of several useful components. You may be able to donate whole blood, plasma or platelets. Each type of blood donation is used for different medical treatments, and your blood type determines the best donation for you to make.

Its easy to check if you can give blood - click the link to the Australian Red Cross Blood Service - http://www.donateblood.com.au/eligibility#can-i-give-blood
